Cleaner Water From Every Tap
What's in Berea's Water?
The numbers your water utility reports, in plain sight
Berea's tap water comes from Berea City PWS, serving 19,000 people. In the most recent reported data, 25 contaminants were detected, and 15 of them exceed EWG health guidelines. Here's what that means for your house.
Reported levels, 2013-2024
15 contaminants above EWG health guidelines
| Contaminant | Detected level | Over EWG guideline | Potential effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haloacetic acids (HAA9) | 23.2 ppb | 387x | Linked to cancer risk |
| Total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) | 43.3 ppb | 289x | Linked to cancer risk |
| Bromodichloromethane | 13.2 ppb | 221x | Linked to cancer risk |
| Haloacetic acids (HAA5) | 11.1 ppb | 111x | Linked to cancer risk |
| Dibromochloromethane | 10.8 ppb | 108x | Linked to cancer risk |
| Dibromoacetic acid | 2.73 ppb | 91x | Above EWG health guideline |
| Chloroform | 16.8 ppb | 42x | Linked to cancer risk |
| Dichloroacetic acid | 5.61 ppb | 28x | Linked to cancer risk |
To be fair to the utility: these levels comply with federal legal limits where limits exist. What they exceed are EWG's stricter health guidelines, which are based on current health research rather than regulatory compromise. Seven more contaminants exceed guidelines beyond the eight shown here. See the full utility report at EWG's Tap Water Database. Data period 2013-2024. Figures read 2026-10-01.
The part that matters for your house
Utility numbers are the starting point, not your answer
These are system-wide averages. What comes out of your tap depends on your pipes, your neighborhood, and whether you are on city water or a private well. The only way to know what your family is actually drinking is to test the water at your own faucet.
Clear Choice Water Co. tests the water at your own tap anywhere in Berea, explains the results in plain English, and only then recommends treatment, sized to what your water actually shows.
